I swear, every time I walk through the halls, I feel like Cady from “Mean Girls.” I literally see the jungle-like interactions. And when I blink, the images DON’T go away. Seriously, shut up and go to class. Half of the time, I have a headache and really don’t want to hear underclassmen screaming about stuff I really don’t care about. It is completely and utterly unnecessary to scream an unintelligible phrase to your friend who is five feet away from you. Maybe I’m not clear on this issue. So let me break it down. If I got a dollar for every time I heard a juvenile comment being screamed across the hallway, I would be a millionaire.

I have to give the school props. JC is donating 20 percent of the money raised from the Patriot Raffle to help out the earthquake victims of Haiti. Although I really haven’t heard much about the raffle this year, I’m proud of the administration’s decision. Haiti is in need of any help it can get. It’s also nice to know a portion of our money is actually going to go to a good cause. I don’t know where the other eighty percent is going, but I can now sleep soundly knowing that our school community is doing something useful with the money.

Finally, the school has recognized the art of yoga. I myself discovered yoga through my mother, who has been doing it for several months now. It is one of the most relaxing, yet challenging forms of exercise that I’ve ever done. I did thirty minutes of yoga after one of my runs and I felt absolutely wonderful afterwards. It relieves stress and greatly increases your flexibility over time. I am so glad English teacher Eric Sutton has shared his passion for yoga and pushed for a yoga club.

“From now on, I’m going to…” I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard these words come out of people’s mouths. They claim that they are going to follow through with their New Year’s resolutions. They’re going to change this or do that, but they always end up either blowing it off or failing to complete the task. Two years in a row, I’ve gone up to the track at a local high school and have seen tons of people jogging and walking. I went up the next day to find the same track completely deserted. Wow guys, way to follow through with your resolutions! I could care less if you’re the laziest person on earth, but if you claim you’re going to do something, then don’t just talk it up—do it!

Christmas—my favorite time of the year— a time when everyone bustles with cheer. I love putting up lights to bring a soft winter glow, and then wrapping gifts with pretty paper and bows! I shop and spend too much money in glee, and then go out to buy a nice Christmas tree. It’s about the traditions both new and old, like getting your tongue stuck on a pole so cold. Tinsel on the tree and toys in the store, putting up wreathes to adorn my front door. Finally, the Christmas card picture, where I awkwardly pose, I’m sad this editorial must come to a close!

During the assembly for the juniors and seniors on December 2, we were told that the next day was going to be some kind of dress-up day. First off, I wasn’t even sure whether we were supposed to just wear black and gold or to actually dress nicely. Second, I still have no idea why we did this. Patron something or another? It seemed like it was ultimately about the buttons because the assembly in the gym on Friday was a raffle. If the initial of your last name was called, you had to have your buttons on to potentially win a prize. But is this why we got all jazzed up? Or was it something completely irrelevant? I’d really like to know, because I felt like a complete idiot coming into school in my black under armor shirt and gold cross country tee-shirt. I guess I didn’t completely get the whole “patron-button-patriot-dress-up-day” memo.

To send a single college your SAT scores, College Board is charging $9.50! Not only that, but application fees for colleges can be as expensive as eighty dollars. We already have to pay an arm and a leg for tuition, room, and board if we get in. Why should they make us pay to simply apply to a school? I can understand a ten dollar fee. But the current costs are just ridiculous. When our parents have spent money through the roof after we graduate from college, we will know who to partially thank.

I didn’t expect the whole treasure island, pirate invasion, hidden treasure homecoming theme to be very good. But my attitude instantly changed as I walked through the two open doors and felt the beat of the music throughout my entire body. The turnout was fantastic, and everybody looked great. There was no chaos this year, and nobody made fools out of themselves. The style of dancing got a little provocative, but I guess you take the good with the bad. And although the choice of music could’ve been, well, a lot better, homecoming was, overall, a thumbs up.

Early one morning, I received a text message from one of my best friends telling me about how some kid was thought to have been stuck in a flying saucer full of helium and it wasn’t even realized that the kid was in it until the saucer had been launched. What? Are his parents stupid? How could you not see your kid walk inside of a flying saucer, or launch it when it’s totally obvious that your son isn’t standing next to you anymore? And the fact that this whack-job family is in the middle of an interview when the kid just starts puking everywhere makes the situation even stranger. Quite frankly, I have heard so much about this kid and his family that I am having a difficult time writing this. And oh by the way, the kid was never in the flying saucer; it was just a hoax.

The bell rings at 9:28 on Tuesday morning. I have to run from the third floor, all the way down to the first floor, and then back up to the second floor all in four minutes. Other people who are more fortunate can dilly-dally in the hallways and actually think that standing in the middle of the stairway is a good idea. No. Don’t scream to your friends who are three stories away. Don’t stand there and whip out your phone to send a text when the person behind you actually needs to get somewhere. When there is literally a waiting line just to get down one flight of stairs, you know there’s a problem. People need to become more aware of the people behind them, and to become more conscience of the fact that they don’t rule the school stairwells.
