New York, New York – A woman found smuggling dozens of baboon, green monkey, and warthog meat through customs at New York’s JFK airport has been sentenced to three years of probation. Mamie Manneh, a Liberian living in Staten Island, told authorities that she had the meat for religious reasons. The meat is a staple of some African cuisines, but U.S. officials say that it could cause outbreaks of diseases like monkeypox and Ebola.

Paris, France – An Air France jet last month traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris encountered problems in the same area that another Air France jet flying the same route in June crashed and killed all 228 people on board. Air France said the November flight encountered moderate to severe turbulence four hours into the flight, but the plane continued to fly normally after half an hour of turbulence. French authorities believe an analysis of the November incident could explain the June crash. Authorities currently have no official explanation of the June crash, as no flight recorders were ever recovered.

Washington, D.C. –Congress decided that a final version of a transportation funding bill would include an amendment once again allowing Amtrak train passengers to pack firearms in their checked baggage. The right to carry firearms on the nation’s rail carrier was revoked after the September 11 terror attacks. Director of Media Relations for Amtrak Steve Kulm said that the linking of the amendment with the funding bill was inappropriate and that Amtrak will now have to make physical changes to cars and stations because of the amendment. Currently, 30 percent of Amtrak’s stations are able to screen checked luggage.
