In the wake of the devastating earthquake that has annihilated Haiti, many celebrities have stepped up to donate their money to this worthy cause.  George Clooney stands out among the supporters because he is working with MTV Networks to organize a telethon, with proceeds going to the island nation.

This is not the first telethon that Clooney has been involved with.  He also worked to organize telethons following the September 11 terrorist attacks and the South Asian tsunami.

Through his work with these telethons, Clooney is setting himself apart from his peers.  While it is great that many celebrities give money to such a deserving cause, let’s face it: a couple hundred thousand dollars, or even a million dollars, is just a drop in the bucket for many celebrities.  Plus, these large money donations can be used as tax write-offs.

What Clooney is doing takes time—he even skipped the Critics’ Choice Awards because he was using the time to prepare for the telethon.  Also, he is using his influence to get other people involved.  Other celebrities will be featured during the telethon, and average Americans will be offered a convenient opportunity to make their donations.

Clooney’s work is going above and beyond that of what most celebrities offer during times of crisis.  It is refreshing to see an A-list celebrity who is still connected enough with humanity to want to truly make a difference.
