The varsity field hockey team played its last game of the season against Maryvale on Tuesday. The game was in the first round of the playoff series, and JC was eliminated from the tournament after losing 1-0.
Maryvale scored the only goal in the first half when JC’s defense was caught off guard. For the rest of the game, JC held its own but was unable to score.
Going into the playoffs, JC was ranked seventh and Maryvale second in a conference of eight teams. Because Maryvale was ranked higher, the game was scheduled to be played on their home turf. However, due to poor weather, the game was relocated to JC.
The game was not expected to be played at JC, so the grass on the field had not been cut for several days. The long grass, in addition to the muddy and rainy conditions, created difficult playing conditions, according to senior midfielder Lauren Knaide. “It was like playing in a swamp,” she said. “But it made the game interesting—we were all covered in mud by the end.”
The seniors on the team were especially disappointed about the loss on their last game for JC. “I wanted to win so badly,” said senior captain forward Elisabeth Kearby. “It wasn’t just about that one game. It was an accumulation of four years of dedication to the team.”
The girls should not be disappointed in their performance, according to Coach Megan Deroba. “They put a lot of energy into the game, especially considering the weather factor,” she said. “Even though the scoreboard was not in our favor, it was a good game and they showed a lot of skill.”
