Freshman Scott Strappelli and junior captain Mat Miller captured wrestling state championships February 20 at the Maryland Independent School State Championships at McDonogh in the 112 and 152 weight classes, respectively.
Strappelli defeated Daniel Sanchez of Georgetown Prep 4-3 in double overtime by scoring two points with less than 10 seconds left in the match. Strappelli won despite having his head wrapped because of nose bleeds.
Miller battled back from an early 2-0 deficit against Tyler Rill of Mount St. Joseph to take a 4-3 lead in the third period before pinning.
Freshman George Weber took third in the 125 pound weight class, defeating Sam Vaughters of St. Mary’s 6-2.
Senior Stephen St. Clair lost to Mount St. Joseph’s Tyler Tippett 7-0 in the consolation round of the 215 pound weight class to take fourth.
Other wrestlers placed as well. Senior Sam Chell took fifth in the 140 pound weight class, junior Joe Vitucci took seventh in the 135 pound weight class, and senior Will Puhl, junior Dan Froehlich, and junior Lance Waters took eighth in the 171 pound, 130 pound, and 119 pound weight classes, respectively.
