Athletic department forms new leadership committee

Written by Erin Hanratty, Sports Editor

The Athletic Department is in the early stages of forming a new Athletic Department Leadership Committee.  Founded by Assistant Athletic Director Stephanie Maychack, the committee is made up of a group of student athletes looking to increase their leadership potential.

The predecessor to the new committee was the Captains Committee, run by former teacher and women’s soccer coach Heidi Weaver. The committee was for female student athlete leaders.

Juniors and seniors were selected for the Athletic Department Leadership Committee by their coaches and teammates based on superior leadership qualities.  The final committee will have thirty to forty men and women representing all of the sports programs.

Although many of the specifics of the organization are still being decided on, the goal of the committee is to help students  develop their leadership skills.  The committee will meet four to six times a year to participate in leadership-oriented activities, such as listening to motivational speakers.

“It’s exciting to get together a committee where everybody is a leader in their own way and united together. Everyone really respects each other,” said Maychack.

Athletic Director Larry Dukes said, “They are all already leaders. We hope to further that through the leadership program.”
